From this vantage point he views a shark leap from the water and impale itself on an enormous spike which protrudes from between legs of a beautiful naked woman. David begins his cross country trip in California. He gets pulled over for speeding and tries to medicate himself with pie. Except he hates pie. So he calls his mom whose tranquil tones put him to sleep. While sleeping David has a vision of a teenage girl who runs away from home convinced she can have a new life in California. As he continues his drive he meets two Canadian tourists at an archeologic site in the middle of the Mojave. They're all taken on a trek to the base of a dig, deep below the desert floor. Their tour guide is Ruth, an irrascible 80 year-old who'd lived in a shack by the site since it was founded by Dr. Louis Leaky, her secret amour, 50 years earlier. David dreams he's a girl, in high school who has grow to 9 feet tall while she was away for the summer. None of the boys will have her, except the band leader who leaps off the stage and gives her a slow dance. David wakes up in Boulder, CO where has he difficulty relating to his brother who asks him to bless the meal at a table filled with people who eschew organized religion. David makes a prayer in rememberance of the origin of things and is overwhelmed as he visualizes every step a fish has gone through in order to become the fired fish fillet they're about to eat. David's car breaks down in the middle
of Wyoming. He's picked up Crazy Jack. A friendly and terrifying
fellow who preaches to him about how God Made America and how he
is on a mission to find God to have some words with him. David calls home to make sure his mom is still the same mom he remembers. David has his car repaired and continues east. He listens to an piece on NPR about Temple Grandin developing a harness to calm cows before their slaughter. He dreams he's a happy cow and wakes just before he drives off the road. David calls his mom AGAIN even though there's nothing to say. David is almost at his destination when he turns the car around and goes to Burning Man. He meets an incredible woman with whom he takes mushrooms. He falls asleep, but she undergoes an ecstatic journey. She returns to tell him she can see right through to his soul. Once her possession is finished she collapses. As she falls asleep in his arms, she confesses, "It's good to be home." |
