SYNOPSIS The Story:
Mike sneezes and crashes his car. Over a year before Mike crashes Amy takes Mike on his first deep sea dive. She has just joined the project as the marine biology expert. They fall in love instantly. A month before he crashes, Mike is testing his virtual reality underwater simulation. He runs a dolphin encounter and is amazed at the results. He runs more tests with the aid of his computer assistant, Raoul, and finds a problem with an oil rig Amy placed in the scenario to make an environmentalist point.
Childhood FLASHBACK. Mike is in bed, the night after his first day in First Grade. He's afraid to go to sleep and does everything he can to keep his mom with him. His mother is still reeling from his father's recent unexpected death. The phone rings...and rings and rings and rings. A year before Mike crashes, his boss, Bill, dominates a phone conversation with Mike and emphasizes that the project should be more fun and less realistic. A month before he crashes, Mike tests Level Three - a
shark chase. Nine months before Mike crashes, Amy's invites Mike over to her apartment and she cooks him a surprise meal. The evening ends awkwardly. A few minutes before Mike crashes, he finally turns on the radio and listens to the song which has been trying to play for him all this time. In hearing it, he realizes quite clearly what he has to do and a sense of joy overwhelms him. He dances and sings into his transformation. The rain suddenly stops. Mike takes down the top of the convertible. He accidentally honks the horn as he did in the party scene, but he now revels in the honking. Mike calls Amy and expresses his love. He sneezes and...
Act II Childhood FLASHBACK. The space shuttle Challenger explodes. Mike wants to get out of the house. His mother implores him to stay as she watches the Challenger explosion over and over again. The phone rings. Mike's mother is terrified to answer it. Mike wants to. Mike tries to leave, but returns, tries again to leave, but returns, and finally leaves. Just after Mike tests the Shark chase, he gets a message: Amy has demanded that Bill include the oil spill scenario or she quits. Bill accepts her resignation and tells Mike to meet with her to tell her the news. Mike tests the last two levels - underwater bioluminescent life. He sees in these creatures a parable for his own love affair. Mike meets with Amy the next evening in a café. It's the first time they've seen each other in months after Mike got cold feet. He wants to dissuade her from leaving the project. She wants to tell him she loves him. It's a tortured meeting where they have to start over nine times before coming to the right ending. Finally, she kisses him and they go home her apartment. The morning after. Amy wakes and is beaming. Mike wakes, freaks out and runs home. Amy is devastated. Later that day, Mike comes home. Raoul tells to Mike to go back to Amy. Mike rushes to his car in the middle of a storm and speeds over to her house. Mike finally turns on the radio...a sense of joy overwhelms him. He dances and sings...The rain suddenly stops...He accidentally honks the horn as he did in the party scene...Mike calls Amy and expresses his love. He sneezes and...crashes his car. |
